Liver Pain, Do I Need to See a Doctor?

In my long years of experience as a yoga instructor, I know of people who have suffered from liver pain and their condition greatly improved after regularly doing certain yoga exercises. Yoga exercises such as the cow pose, bridge pose and cat pose and several other types can help alleviate or prevent liver pains caused by a fatty liver. However, not all liver pains are caused by a fatty liver. They may be caused by a more serious health condition.

Fat in the liver is normal. What is abnormal is excessive fat causing a fatty liver. This disease can be hereditary and are common among people who are overweight or obese. Signs of a fatty liver disease include loss of appetite, fatigue, nauseas, jaundice, weight loss, dark urine and liver pain. If it is in the early stage, it could be treated by lifestyle changes such as yoga exercises, eating a well-balanced diet, and avoiding unnecessary medications that can destroy the liver.

But among other liver diseases that can cause liver pains, the fatty liver disease is one of the least serious conditions. There are several other more serious health problems that you should watch out for if you are suffering from liver pain.

Based on my research, here are some of the most serious health conditions that can be manifested by liver pains:

1. Acetaminophen Toxicity

Excessive intake of medicine containing acetaminophen which is a common component of headache and allergy capsules can lead to liver damage. Aside from liver pain, other symptoms include itchy skin, dark urine and flu-like symptoms. The patient may also experience having yellowish skin and whiter eyes.

2. Liver Cancer

In its early stage, liver cancer is hard to detect because there are almost no symptoms associated with it. It is normally detected if it has reached the final stage when the patient already suffers from extreme liver pain and other symptoms. Other symptoms are loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness, vomiting or nausea, discoloration of skin, and eyes that turn white. Sadly, liver cancer has no cure.

3. Cirrhosis of the Liver

Cirrhosis of the liver is a common disease among people who are alcoholic. Its symptoms may include liver pain, gallstones, easy bruising, itchy hands and feet, bleeding in esophagus and intestines, dark colored urine and nausea among others. Cirrhosis of the liver can only be cured through a liver transplant.

4. Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that may lead to liver cancer if not treated. Its symptoms include diarrhea, pain in the liver, dark urine, jaundice, achiness in different parts of the body, vomiting, and frequent mild fevers. It can be treated by taking in antivirals and by drug therapy.

5. Liver fibrosis

Liver fibrosis is the advanced stage of the alcoholic liver disease. It is characterized by the formation of fibroids and fibrous tissues in the liver. Regenerative nodules and scarring are also common. Patients normally experience painful liver, itchy hands and feet, loss of appetite, exhaustion, swelling in legs and feet, dark urine, and others.

If you have liver pain, you cannot simply self-medicate it or ignore it. There are many other causes of liver pain aside from a fatty liver. It is best to seek medical attention immediately since liver pain comes with other symptoms listed above.

10 Low Carb Vegetables for Weight Loss

diet scaleI have neighbors and friends who are exerting much effort to shave-off several pounds of their weight in the shortest time possible. Many of them practice a 1,000-calorie diet which involves consuming a minimum amount of calories. And every time they will ask my opinion, I often suggest including low carb vegetables in their diet.

There are a number of vegetables which have very low calorie content, and they are excellent for weight loss. Here are the top ten vegetables I can recommend:

1. Cucumber

A cup of cucumber has 16 calories. This crispy vegetable is great for salads, sandwiches and even by itself. Not only does it taste good but it is also rich in vitamins K and C, loaded with anti-oxidants and anti-cancer benefits and is great for the skin too!

2. Broccoli

There is just about 6 grams of carbohydrates per cup of broccoli. Broccolis are great for soups, salads and can be added in omelettes as well. Broccoli is also known for its anti-cancer, cholesterol-lowering and detoxifying properties. The best way to cook broccoli is by steaming it. Just remember that overcooking broccoli can lose its effectiveness.

3. Mushroom

Mushrooms have only 2.2 grams of carb per cup. They are rich in vitamins B and D and also help in cholesterol reduction and antioxidant support as well as in boosting our immune system. They taste awesome in soups, side dishes and omelettes. Just be careful not to overcook them.

4. Romaine Lettuce

This green leafy vegetable is a good source of vitamins A and K, folate and fiber. It has only 1 gram of carbohydrates in a cup of shredded romaine lettuce. It is very good for a 1000 calorie diet. These are great for salads and sandwich wraps. Just don’t forget to wash them thoroughly.

5. Tomato

Tomatoes are rich in Vitamins A, C and K and are known for their good source of lycopene which helps in preventing heart diseases and cancers. Tomatoes have low calorie content and have just 6 grams of carbohydrates per cup. These are perfect for sauces, soups, salads, salsas and sandwiches.

6. Spinach

I remember Popeye whenever I think of spinach and how just by eating it suddenly makes him so strong! And yes, spinach is very healthy. It is rich in vitamins K, A, E and C. 7. Green Beans

Green beans prevent constipation, stabilize blood sugars, help lower cholesterol, and are rich in vitamins A, C and K. A cup of cooked green beans has 44 calories. Like broccoli, the best way to cook green beans is by steaming. Sautéing is also good as long as you do not overcook them. They are delicious and perfect for salads and side dishes.

8. Asparagus

Asparagus is great for soups, salads, pastas and omelettes. It is one of those low carb vegetables that are rich in Vitamin K, folate, and Vitamins A and B1. Asparagus can also help in regulating the heart and blood sugars and has some anti-cancer benefits too!

9. Celery

Celery is rich in vitamins K and A. It also helps in our digestive tract and cardiovascular support. With only 3 grams of carb and 16 calories per cup, it is a perfect ingredient for soups, salads, casseroles, stews and stir-fries!

10. Cabbage

What Is Neutropenia and How It Can Affect You

Neutropenia has nothing to do with plants which are what this blog is all about. But it is a serious condition that can affect you and me without us knowing it. And once we have it, we may not be able to continue some of the activities we enjoy doing like gardening.

Neutropenia is a disorder affecting the blood where a person has an abnormally low level of neutrophils. Neutrophils are what make up the majority of the white blood cells in the body. They destroy the bacteria found in the blood and defend the body against infections. Hence, a person with neutropenia is more prone to bacterial infections. And without medical attention, it can result to life-threatening conditions such as sepsis.

It is not easy to diagnose neutropenia because more often, it does not manifest any symptoms. It can only be diagnosed through a test that involves counting the blood cells in a blood sample. Other tests may also be required like a biopsy of the bone marrow to identify the cause of neutropenia. And depending on the duration of the illness, neutropenia may be acute or chronic. It may be acute if it only lasts for three months or chronic if it lasts longer.

There are numerous factors that may cause neutropenia. It may arise after a person suffers from certain medical conditions including viral, bacterial and parasitic infections such as tuberculosis, EBV, malaria and HIV. It may also be caused by diseases affecting the bone marrow like leukemias, aplastic anemia, myelodyplastic syndrome and myelofibrosis. A person with certain vitamin deficiencies like folate or vitamin B12 deficiency is also at risk of contracting neutropenia. Certain medical treatments like radiation therapy and chemotherapy are also common causes. Treatment is normally dependent on the cause of your condition. But the emphasis is always on preventing and treating the infection rather than curing neutropenia itself.

Neutropenic patients are normally advised by doctors to follow neutropenic precautions. These involve being extra careful with what you eat and should not include uncooked or undercooked food. Also avoid certain foods that may put you at risk of contracting bacteria and microorganisms. Additionally, wear complete apparel and be careful on the places you go to. You should avoid going to crowded places, hospitals and construction sites where fungi and bacteria are common.

If you are a neutropenic patient who is into gardening like me, you can still continue with your hobby as long as you observe the necessary precautions. You should wear a mask when gardening and always wear gloves when tilling the soil. Do not hold flowers and other plants with your bare hand because they may have bacteria from the soil. Do not hold organic fertilizers from manures or compost. Also, wash your hands after gardening. But most importantly, you should consult your doctor about your plans of gardening so that your doctor can give you proper advice.

If you are diagnosed with neutropenia, you are more at risk of contracting diseases and infections from exposure to dirty food and dirty surroundings. It is therefore important that you are extra cautious of what you eat, what you wear and what you do.

gardening bruiseAs a gardener, I tend to get unexplained bruising somewhere on my body.  I usually noticed these bruises at night when I sleep.  I just cannot remember how the bruise happen but it just did.  After years of gardening I have figured out ways to remedy this.


There’s more than one way to heal a bruise. There are of course a number of home remedies, some of which actually work quite well. Then there’s the standard medical treatment which usually consists of applying ice at first, and then applying heat later on to promote healing. The combination of ice and heat usually works as well as anything.


It’s Your Body That Does Most of the Healing


You have to bear in mind that anyone who tells you how to heal a bruise may not be aware of the fact that a bruise will in almost all cases heal itself, and will usually do so without a great deal of outside help. Instead of looking for ways to heal a bruise, as if it were possible to do so overnight, you might be better off if you search for ways to treat bruises instead. There are a number of different ways to treat a bruise, most of which either keep a bruise from growing larger or simply enable it to heal more quickly.

If you bruise your knee or ankle, taking an aspirin to reduce the pain and swelling might seem the natural thing to do. It would be better to find a pain-relieving substitute. Since aspiring is an anti-coagulant, taking one or two may result in your bruise becoming larger and slower to heal than might have otherwise have been the case. As long as blood is seeping from damaged blood vessels, a bruise will continue to grow and healing is delayed.


Another preventive measure, one that may take some time and may not be possible for everyone is to try to lower your blood pressure, especially if it is a bit on the high side. Not only does lowering one’s blood pressure bring about other benefits, but people with low blood pressure tend not to bruise as easily and when they do get a bruise it does not tend to grow. Simple physics would suggest that the lower your blood pressure, the less will be amount of blood that will escape from a ruptured blood vessel. That may or may not be true, but having lower blood pressure does indeed seem to lessen your chances of getting a bad bruise.


Another popular home remedy is to apply an aloe vera gel to the bruised area. This will certainly cleanse the area, which will at least lessen the chances of infection. Whether aloe vera actually causes a bruise to heal more quickly has yet to be proven. All that can be said for certain is that aloe vera has many beneficial uses, and it certainly won’t make things worse. There’s another gel that athletes sometimes use to treat bruises. It’s called arnica gel, and it may be worth looking into.

The Terrier Breeds – Different Dogs With Much in Common

terrierWhen asked what the main characteristics of terrier breeds are, two of those breeds often come to mind. One is the Airedale terrier, one of the larger breed of terriers, and the other is everyone’s favorite, the Yorkshire terrier, or ‘Yorkie”, which is often classified as a ‘toy’ breed. There is of course the Jack Russell terrier to consider. The Jack Russell is one of the most energetic of the terrier breeds, or for that matter any of the dog breeds you could ever hope to own. There are also the mixed breeds also, like the rare terrier husky pomeranian mix. There are all types of terriers out there but I’ll be referring to the pure breeds.

Not All Terriers Are Looked Upon Favorably

Terriers are often associated with being wire-haired, which is a feature that is characteristic of a number of the breeds. Terriers are sometimes associated with the American Pit Bull terrier, a breed that has a poor, although somewhat undeserved reputation, as it is most often the owners or handlers that are responsible for the breed’s sometimes bad habits. The Pit Bull is not a true terrier. It is a cross between the Staffordshire terrier and the English bulldog.

A Fearless Big Dog in a Small Package

Most terriers share a few things in common, especially the smaller breeds. They tend to be fearless. A Yorkshire terrier can for example at times find itself in danger since it doesn’t seem to realize how small it is compared to other breeds. It has a tendency to stand its ground, no matter what it is facing. The smaller breeds also tend to be highly energetic, somewhat stubborn, and often comical. Some, like the Jack Russell, can definitely be a handful at times, but still make wonderful pets.

Not the Most Sociable Breeds

Most terriers, such as the Yorkie Poodle, don’t like other dogs. Even when socialized they don’t often get along with other members of the canine community. They will chase cats, mice, and hamsters too, which means if you want a terrier in your household it may be best to stick to a single animal, or perhaps two terriers of the same breed. It’s best however not to get two of the same sex, particularly two males.

The smaller terriers can be a child’s pet, but they can be a problem with small children if they haven’t been well trained and socialized as one of the terrier’s traits is to try to take charge of things anytime it thinks it can get away with it. A terrier can learn to be just as obedient as any other breed, but it will still try to test you from time to time, and it is unlikely to let a small child be its master.

Why Terriers are Sometimes Slow to Learn Commands

When attempting to train a terrier it’s helpful to remember the type of dog it is not. A terrier is not a sporting dog, it is not a working dog, nor is it a herding dog. What terriers do best is chase down and kill vermin and rodents, whether that means trapping a rat or a mouse in a corner or digging down a badger hole. A badger is a fierce fighter, but so is a terrier. A terrier won’t wait for a command to go after a rodent. It will just do what it feels it is has been put on this earth to do – capture and kill without being instructed to do so, and without interference while doing so. It is this independent streak that can make training a terrier a bit of a challenge at times. What that means is that the trainer needs to have a little more patience than is required for some if not most other breeds.

If there is any breed of dogs that need exercise it is the terrier. The typical terrier is a dynamo wrapped in a fur coat. Terriers are for the most part very strong dogs for their size, and they are very active dogs. A Yorkshire terrier may look like a little lap dog but even the Yorkie requires exercise to stay healthy and when taken on a walk can walk someone who is not in shape into the ground. Most terrier breeds also love to play, but they tend to take play a little too serious at times.

If you play tug-of-war with a terrier you may reach a point where it’s best to let the terrier win the match and go on to something else. Terriers can be fierce competitors, and you don’t want their taste for competition to turn into a taste for blood, which could happen if things got out of hand. This is of course of utmost importance when a bull-terrier is the opponent, but even a Jack Russell might take a nip at you if it becomes overly enthusiastic and excited.

Terriers do love to play games though. The secret seems to be to have a variety of different games in mind so the dog doesn’t become overly obsessed with playing the same game over and over. Games are an excellent way to give your terrier the exercise it needs, and given the high-strung nature of some of the terrier breeds, and the intensity with which they go about their business, you’ll likely get the exercise you need as well.

Tattoos for Girls: What Can You Say About It

One time, a friend visited me and we had a long chat in my garden. And during our conversation, she mentioned to me her problem about one of her girls who recently had a tattoo on her tummy. She did not approve of it but cannot do anything about it either because it was already there. In fact, she just saw the tattoo accidentally and she knew it was never her daughter’s intention to tell her. I don’t know what to say to my friend because I’m not really for or against tattooing.

In today’s society, tattoo is becoming common among many women. Some girls even have their first tattoo in their early teen years. But of course, many of them, just like my friend’s daughter, did not ask for approval from their parents.

When it comes to tattoos among women, the most popular are side tattoos for girls. Many women are just not yet ready to have exposed tattoos like men. Girls and women prefer to have tattoos on their sides, in the hip line, or on the tummy so that they can still hide them with clothing. I also personally observed this because I rarely see women having tattoos on exposed areas like their chest or arms that I can see on men.

For parents who have girls with a tattoo or are planning to have a tattoo, it can be a disappointment to discover it. But I would suggest talking to your girl. Gently tell them your thoughts on why you agree or disagree with their idea to help them make the right decision. Let them understand the pros and cons of having a tattoo. But in the end, don’t force them to take your decision. They should do it based on their personal decision. If you force them, they may still get a tattoo later on, without informing you.

Many girls would claim that having a tattoo is their expression of who they are. And their friends also have it so they should have it. But they may be losing a perspective of their future. For example, if you get married in the future, your future partner may not like your tattoo. Or what if in the future, you will have a change of lifestyle and you want your tattoo to be removed? Or what if you are applying for a job and it requires you to be clean and free of tattoo. Tattoo removal is not as easy as getting it. Even if you will have it removed professionally, it will leave scars on your skin. And this is what many young girls don’t know when they get a tattoo.

In the end of our conversation with my friend, she told me that there is nothing else that she can do about the tattoo. She already talked with her daughter and told her of her disappointment. But that’s the end of it. There is nothing else that she can do about the tattoo. It is already there. She just hopes that her daughter will be able to understand the impacts of her decision and would not get another tattoo in the future. And I could not agree any less with her.

How to Deal with Newborn Hiccups

Hiccups are usually harmless and you have nothing to worry about even among newborns. But even if hiccups are quite common, they can also cause some mild discomfort upon infants. Hiccups prevent them from having a sound sleep. And in some instances, it may cause them to cry for a while.

Hiccups mostly happen when your baby has been overfed, when he has swallowed too much air, or when the diaphragm has been irritated. Fortunately, you will not have to guess if hiccups are causing discomforts on your baby. It is pretty obvious when you will hear it.

Now you don’t want your little one to be in continued discomfort. Here are some tips and remedies when dealing with newborn hiccups:

1. Feed half as much and twice as frequent. Slow down feedings. Give time for your baby to take in just enough milk rather than giving one big feeding. Hiccups occur when your baby’s stomach distends too quickly from drinking too much.

2. Lessen any air intake. When breastfeeding, make your baby’s mouth tightly latch on to your entire areola and not just your nipple. In this way, your baby will lessen any air intake from the mouth. If bottle-fed, hold the bottle in a 45-degree angle so that the air can immediately settle to the base of the bottle, lessening the chances for your baby to swallow some air.

3. Pause and let your baby burp during feedings. Halfway through or when transferring to the other breast, take a break and burp your baby by setting your baby upright upon your chest with the head a little over your shoulder, then start rubbing or patting your baby’s back gently until your baby burps. This reduces some air that might have been swallowed and to allow the milk enough time to digest. If bottle fed, when halfway finished, burp your baby then resume feeding. Wait and resume a few minutes later if your baby doesn’t burp.

4. Position your baby upright while feeding. By positioning your baby in a 30- to 45-degree angle while feeding, this allows the air not to settle in your baby’s stomach but will rise to the top instead, making it easier to burp.

When your infant is already having hiccups, try these simple methods:

1. Breastfeed your baby. Just like adults, whenever we have hiccups, we are advised to drink a fairly large amount of water in gulps, and somehow, it works! For babies though, try letting them drink some milk. In my experience, it works too!

2. Hold your baby upright while giving backrubs. A gentle rubbing massage at the back can relax your baby’s diaphragm and can stop hiccups. It can also induce burping.

3. Talk and play with your baby. This will divert their attention and the hiccups will eventually stop.

Hiccups usually do not last long. They will eventually stop on their own and you won’t even notice them. Newborn hiccups are normal and will be less frequent as they grow older. Just remember these tips and they will help your baby have less frequent hiccups.

I have always enjoyed spending time with my three-year-old granddaughter Melanie. She is the light of my life and I try to do everything in my power to spend every extra minute I have with her. Now I love the arrangement that we have as it allows me to talk to Melanie for hours at a time. When I am outside, growing organic vegetables in my garden, she sits with me coloring her pages and we talk about everything under the sun. Previously, she used to get bored sitting outside and wanted to go inside and watch TV. This lifestyle suits us both and is best for her health as well as mine. Even if I am inside and working on something, she sits with me happily coloring the pages of her book and talks to me.

I would recommend this course to anyone who has a small child who is interested in coloring or painting. It is a healthy way to express themselves and you can get them to leave the house and sit outside in the lawn or the park.

Braces Pain: What You Can Do to Soothe the Pain


I can still vividly remember the first few days after I had my braces on. I was not able to eat solid food and I had a few cuts in my lips.

Braces pain is quite common. When you have braces, you could experience having cuts or sores on your lips and not being able to eat some foods you normally eat because it can be painful to bite. Many feel miserable and it can be frustrating to be in this situation. But it is just a normal thing especially if your braces are still new and you are still getting used to it. Even after months or years of having braces, braces pain will not completely go away unless you decide to take your braces off.

Although you cannot completely stop braces pain, there are some tooth pain relief that will make you feel more comfortable:

  • Warm water with salt

Gargle a glass of warm water containing about a teaspoon of salt can soothe the sores in your mouth. It can also make them heal faster. You can do it after brushing your teeth or anytime when you feel the pain.

  • Ice water and cold packs

When the pain is really intense, you could also try drinking very cold water or putting a cold pack in the painful area. The cold can help dull the pain.

  • Cold Foods

You could also treat yourself with frozen delights such as yogurt or ice cream every time you feel the pain. These cold treats will not only soothe the pain, but will also help lighten up your mood.

  • Wine

If you are in a drinking age, drinking wine is another good home remedy to ease braces pain. White wine is preferable because red wine may stain the clear elastics in your braces.

Furthermore, aside from hearing any of the home remedies listed here, it is also important to keep in mind that the pain could worsen if you attempt to bite or chew anything that is hard, crunchy or challenging such as chicken and even sandwiches. It is best to stick with soups and soft foods that do not require chewing such as mashed potato during the first few weeks. At times when the pain is really severe and no home remedy can soothe the pain, you could also take pain relievers. But it is best to get your doctor’s advice first on what pain reliever is more suitable for you.

As much as braces pain hurts, do not be discouraged because it is worth the pain. I have seen many people who greatly improved the appearance of their teeth after years of having their braces on. And you too can enjoy the benefits of braces if you will just bear the first few weeks. Just follow what your dentist told you to do. And when braces pain strikes, just try any of the home remedies listed here. They are inexpensive and have no side effects.
