Herbal Remedies for Diarrhea on Pregnant Women

One good thing I appreciate about gardening is that I am able to grow plants that can be used as a remedy for various diseases. Just recently, a friend who is an expecting mom asked me for some geranium because it is a good remedy for diarrhea during pregnancy. Luckily, I have that in my garden so I gave her some leaves.

Aside from geranium leaves, I found out that there are many other home remedies for diarrhea. They are suitable for pregnant women because they don’t have any side effects on their unborn babies unlike other commercial medications. Below are some of them:

  • Bitter Gourd – Bitter gourd which is a known remedy for diabetes mellitus is also effective for treating diarrhea. To prepare it, simply get some fresh leaves of bitter gourd from your garden and then make it into a juice. Drink a spoonful of the juice once a day until there is no more sign of diarrhea.
  • Guava leaves – Guava may not be as common in the US as it is in tropical countries. But if you have that in your home, boil chopped guava leaves for at least 15 minutes and let it cool. Strain the water and drink a cup of the guava tea every four hours until you find complete relief.
  • Ginger – Another effective herbal remedy for diarrhea on pregnant women is ginger. Grate a small piece of ginger and then mix it with a teaspoon of honey. Take in the mixture but avoid drinking water immediately to avoid diluting the mixture. Another alternative is to prepare ginger tea by boiling several pieces of crushed ginger and then drinking the tea twice daily. You could add honey to the tea for better taste.
  • Carrot – I included carrots in this list although technically, it is not an herb. But since it is easy to plant in any backyard garden, many can benefit from its health benefits including pregnant women with diarrhea. Prepare a carrot juice by blending some carrots and drink one glass of it at least twice daily to alleviate the symptoms of diarrhea. Aside from juicing, you may also eat it fresh or eat pureed carrot several times daily until your diarrhea is gone.
  • Chamomile – Drinking chamomile tea which is prepared by boiling the flowering tops of the plant can also help cure diarrhea. However, some people especially those who are allergic to daisies may have allergic reactions to this tea. If you are allergic to daisies, it is best to choose other herbal remedies for your diarrhea.

If you don’t have any of these plants in your garden, you may also be able to find them in your local supermarket.

Aside from taking any of the herbal remedies listed here, it is also important for pregnant women to avoid taking in foods that cause diarrhea as soon as the symptoms start. These include spicy foods, dairy products and certain fruits and vegetables. And while you are still experiencing the symptoms of diarrhea, it is recommended to take in as much water and other beverages which have high electrolyte content. Doing so can help you avoid dehydration which is a more serious side effect of diarrhea.
